TEMPORARY ENGAGEMENT

Temporary Engagement by Cairenn Lawless

Temporary Engagement, by Cairenn Lawless

“Something’s rotten at the chic Devlin Stone Public Relations Agency… and you don’t need Shakespeare or Sherlock Holmes to figure that out. When aspiring actress Lyssa Kendall shows up to replace the boss’s AWOL executive assistant, she sniffs the drama in the air right away. (She also likes the aftershave worn by sexy-but-skittish Devlin Stone.) But is Mr. Perfect paranoid… or is someone (besides Lyssa) really out to get him? Too bad this office stint is only a ‘temporary engagement’ between theater gigs… for the first time ever, Lyssa wants to ‘keep the day-job’.” (via the description on Amazon)

The Dreamer’s Thread, by Starla Huchton

“Everyone Dreams.

But what would you do if you suddenly found out that you were one of the few who creates dreams for the whole world? Would you use your power to harness the light and weave it into beautiful tapestries of magic and wonder, or would you fall prey to the seductive siren song of darkness and nightmares?

For tattoo artist Aura Mayville, this becomes a reality as she is ripped from her life of art and music and thrust into a realm where good and evil struggle for control over the minds and hearts of men. With a sarcastic sorcerer, a mercenary, and her Spirit Guide as her only companions, Aura must journey through the dream realm to discover both her power and where her heart truly lies. In a place where anything is possible, can she find the strength to hold on to herself, or will she be lost to the shadows forever?” (via my other website) [Read more…] about THE DREAMER’S THREAD (redux)

Balticon Panels Overview

May 28, 2012 By Starla Huchton Leave a Comment

As I’m writing this I am on a train on my way back to Rhode Island from Balticon. It’s been a very busy weekend, but an educational one for myself and (hopefully) many others. I recorded several of the panels I either moderated or participated in, and have plans to post those over the next few weeks. You can likely expect one or two a week until they’re all up here. Tons of good information on books and publishing went out, but there were still bucketloads of things we didn’t have time to touch on.

The Back Cover: Designing for Print

The first thing a customer sees about your book is the cover. I’ve talked about that much already. But what’s the second?

For most people, when they see a book they think they might like, the next thing they do is flip it over. What do they expect to see? [Read more…] about The Back Cover: Designing for Print

When I go to do a cover, the biggest time suck will inevitably be one thing.

The title font.

The Heart of the Story

A cover is the first interaction any potential reader will have with your book. Within the first five seconds, a reader will make a whole slew of inferences based on what they see before them. What genre is this book? Is it a lighthearted tale, or a serious one? How much effort has gone into this book? Was time taken to consider every part of production? Is the story intriguing?

These questions, and many others, will be answered with one look. That’s all you get. With the deluge of media out there, competing for a finite pool of consumers, their first look has to be one that leaves them wanting to know more. [Read more…] about The Heart of the Story
