A cover is the first interaction any potential reader will have with your book. Within the first five seconds, a reader will make a whole slew of inferences based on what they see before them. What genre is this book? Is it a lighthearted tale, or a serious one? How much effort has gone into this book? Was time taken to consider every part of production? Is the story intriguing?
These questions, and many others, will be answered with one look. That’s all you get. With the deluge of media out there, competing for a finite pool of consumers, their first look has to be one that leaves them wanting to know more.
When a cover image is of a poor quality, readers are likely to doubt there was much effort expended on the words within. They will doubt any revision, edits, or even a basic spell check was performed on the contents. Even if your manuscript shines like the sun, a dark cloud will be cast over the entire work.
This is where the designer comes in. A designer knows what readers expect to see on book covers, whether it be a romance novel or a memoir. They know fonts. They know color combinations. They are masters of the visual.
As a writer myself, I know how personal written work can be. Our stories are like our children; we create them, shape them, and watch them grow into fully functional pieces of literature. Our dream is to watch our works soar to heights greater than we imagined, and we are crushed when they fail to reach their potential.
I’ve made it my mission to work with authors to produce covers that express the essence of their stories. I talk with them about their writing to get a feel for the tone, characters, and plot. I encourage authors to share their ideas about what they would like to see depicted in the image, yet keep an open mind about the style or concept. Introducing new ideas they may not have considered can lead to the growth of creativity along with developing a remarkable image that will be sure to attract attention.
Above all, I strive for customer satisfaction and will pursue the best possible design for the clients desires, as well as their audience.
